Brush Drawing:  A Basic Course

by Richele Baburina

The practice of brush drawing to capture gesture and form found in nature was almost forgotten until rediscovered and given new life. In an era dominated by digital images, this simple art form fosters control with a paintbrush and an artist’s eye through thoughtful observation. Brush drawing encourages you to replace technology with technique as a means to appreciate and express beauty via an entry in a nature notebook, illustration in a bullet journal, and more.

A 1″ grid paper is suggested for this course. We recommend our Quadrille Pad which was specially-designed to accept watercolor while keeping work neat and orderly.

Discover brush drawing and diffuse the digital in your daily life.

About the Author
Until discovering brush drawing and its many qualities, Richele Baburina related to Lizzie Bennet’s confession in Pride and Prejudice, “My fingers…do not produce the same expression. But then I have always supposed it to be my own fault—because I would not take the trouble of practicing.” Richele’s intrigue with the underlying theory, principles, and the creative process in making art prompted her to concentrate in Art History. Also the author of a series of arithmetic books, she fashions mainly with words and speaks nationally on topics ranging from Jane Austen to Geometry. She harvests laughter and love with her husband and two boys in New England.

About the Illustrator
Emily Kiser is passionate about propagating truth and beauty in the world. She is first and foremost a wife and mother but also the librarian of a private lending library serving her community with out-of-print children’s books, host of the popular podcast, A Delectable Education, and educational consultant. It is her privilege to have contributed her nature brush drawings to Brush Drawing: A Basic Course and she hopes many children and adults will grow in their ability to create beauty as they contemplate the wonders of the natural world.

  1. I am about a third of the way done through this course, and I already notice a huge difference in the steadiness of my hand, something I didn’t think I could ever remedy. The exercises have made a noticeable difference in my nature journal and have even helped me with my Italic handlettering. The course may seem simple and even repetitive, but that simplicity is deceptive. The exercises are challenging, meditative, and so worth the time. Also, the format (lessons printed on individual cards) is practical, and the presentation is gorgeous. 😍 It’s a treat to be able to practice. I love the quadrille pad, too. It’s convenient having the right kind of paper handy for these exercises. I can’t recommend this product enough.
